I had an interesting conversation with an entrepreneur today.
They wanted to cancel a complimentary photography session because they wanted something more personalized to their vision.
That’s completely fair.
Every business owner wants their brand represented in a way that feels authentic.
The challenge is that the session is provided complimentary, through a company they use to list and market their services, and I’m one of the approved vendors responsible for creating content that meets that company’s visual standards.
The company isn’t paying for random photos.
They’re paying for a specific outcome.
If I ignore those guidelines, the submission could be rejected, which means the company doesn’t receive the intended benefit and I don’t get paid for the work.
The frustrated client opted to just use the images they already have.
The interesting part? The client’s goal was to communicate the scale and volume of their business.
When I looked at the images they were currently using, they didn’t accomplish that either.
They were low-quality cellphone photos that failed to tell the story they wanted potential customers to see.
It reminded me that flexibility is one of the most valuable skills a business owner can have.
Not every opportunity will align perfectly with your original vision.
Sometimes the fastest path to your goal is working within a proven framework rather than fighting against it.
Emotional intelligence plays a role here too.
Understanding the objectives of the people investing in your business—and finding ways to create value for everyone involved—often opens more doors than insisting on complete creative control.
The businesses that consistently grow aren’t always the ones with the strongest opinions.
They’re often the ones that recognize when adapting to the opportunity in front of them creates a better outcome for everyone.
